What to do if you receive a FEMA denial letter

Release Number:
DR-4847-CTM_FS_004
Release Date:
enero 8, 2025

After applying for FEMA assistance, you will receive a letter explaining the status of your application. If your letter says ineligible or denied, don’t be discouraged.

Read the letter to see if something else is needed to continue processing your application. Come back to the Disaster Recovery Center with your letter so we can look at next steps.

If you received a letter stating you’re ineligible for assistance or “no decision” can be made at this time, don’t be discouraged or frustrated. Instead, read the entire letter to find out what’s needed for FEMA to continue processing your application. Many times, it’s a simple fix that can be addressed in an appeal.

Some common reasons for an ineligible or “no decision” determination letter are:

Insurance: We may still need a copy of your insurance settlement letter. If your insurance settlement is insufficient to meet your disaster-related needs, you may still be eligible for federal assistance.

Contractor estimate: We may still need an estimate from a contractor on what the repair costs will be for your damages.

Proof of occupancy: When FEMA is unable to verify the occupancy of your primary residence, you may need to provide documentation, such as utility bills, a credit card statement, a phone bill, or driver’s license or other document showing the address of your damaged primary residence.

Missed appointment: If you miss an appointment with a FEMA damage inspector and did not follow up, your application may not move forward. Make sure FEMA has your correct contact information. And if you miss a meeting please get in touch.

There may be other reasons why FEMA determined your application was ineligible. PLEASE bring your letter to the Disaster Recovery Center so that we can work on the next steps together!
