Regional Long-Term Recovery

Our capabilities were tested in 2012 when Hurricane Sandy affected the entire East Coast from Florida to Maine, as well as states as far inland as West Virginia, Ohio and Indiana.

The storm’s effects were extensive, leaving millions without power, destroying hundreds of thousands of homes and causing tens of billions in damages.

Youth Preparedness Council

FEMA’s National Youth Preparedness Council (YPC) was created in 2012 to bring together youth leaders interested in supporting disaster preparedness and making a difference in their communities with national and local preparedness projects.

In Region 2, students from New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and our Tribal Nations come together to implement preparedness projects in an effort to make their communities better prepared and more resilient.
