It has been one year since Typhoon Mawar caused the island of Guam to announce a major
disaster declaration. More than $338 million in federal assistance has been provided to survivors in Guam to
include grants from FEMA through the Individual Assistance and Public Assistance Programs, and low-interest
disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). To-date, FEMA remains in the affected
communities, working with local and state officials to provide Public Assistance grants and temporary housing.

Now, more than 10 months after Typhoon Mawar devastated the island territory, Guam residents continue down their road to recovery with the help of federal funding from the U.S. Small Business Administration and FEMA. To date, more than $324 million in low interest disaster loans from the SBA and direct disaster assistance through FEMA have flowed into communities to help jumpstart the recovery process.

During Typhoon Mawar, wind speed in Guam reached approximately 140 mph, leaving behind a trail of damaged and destroyed homes. In response to the survivors’ needs for a safe, sanitary and secure home, FEMA initiated GUAM STRONG (Getting Urgent Assistance Mobilized to Support Typhoon Repairs ON Guam) to assist affected households by undertaking temporary emergency repairs to make homes habitable.
