DENVER – FEMA has approved $2.4 million in Public Assistance funding for the severe storm and flooding recovery in South Dakota. The assistance was made available under a major disaster declaration issued June 29, 2022. FEMA has approved more than $7.2 million in Public Assistance funding for the South Dakota severe storm and flooding response to date.
The $2.4 million was provided to the Sioux Valley-Southwestern Electric Coop. There were severe storms and high velocity straight-line winds in South Dakota that caused the replacement of 21 power poles and another 529 poles across five counties that needed to be straightened. The Cooperative used the FEMA provided funding to restore the facility back to pre-disaster design, capacity and function.
This funding covers costs incurred between May 12, 2022, through August 30, 2022.
This Public Assistance funding is pursuant to the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act and represents 75 percent of the cost of the project with the remaining cost share the responsibility of the State of South Dakota and the Sioux Valley-Southwestern Electric Coop.
The FEMA Public Assistance program provides funding to governmental agencies and certain private non-profits for eligible disaster response costs and to repair or replace damaged public infrastructure.
