Public Assistance

FEMA helps state, local, tribal, and territorial governments and certain types of private nonprofit organizations respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies. After an event like a hurricane, tornado, earthquake or wildfire, communities need help to cover their costs to remove debris, rebuild roads and restore public buildings such as community centers, businesses, schools, houses of worship and more.

Supporting North Carolina’s Recovery After Helene
Tropical Storm Helene struck Western North Carolina during a peak time for tourists visiting the region to view its scenic fall foliage. As the severity and track of the storm became apparent, FEMA began working in North Carolina and across the southeastern U.S. to support the response and recovery efforts.
