California: Yuba County Climate Change Resiliency Project

Yuba County to strengthen levee system

alert - info

Marysville, California: $29.66 million

Project Description

The communities of Linda and Olivehurst in Yuba County have a history of flooding, including the failure of the existing levee system in 1986 and 1997. These levee failures led to flooding of an urban area and loss of life.

To mitigate future levee issues, Marysville will increase flood protection levels to a uniform 300-year flood level across all levees. They will do this through additional levee embankments, construction of soil bentonite cutoff walls, and levee elevation. New riparian vegetation will also be installed to create wind-wave buffers. These buffers will reduce wind-driven wave heights and lower both erosion and risk of overtopping Highway 70. Upon completion this project will make the communities of Linda and Olivehurst safer and more resilient.
