AUSTIN, Texas – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded $1.3 million to the Harris County Flood Control District through the Texas Division of Emergency Management to redesign and update the district’s existing flood warning system website, www.harriscountyfws.org. The website provides a single source for issuing flood warnings and hydrological information to Harris and surrounding counties.

This grant also funds outreach in the local communities including educational opportunities for officials to learn more about the warning system and the distribution of brochures and publications.

The project is a part of the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) and requires a 25 percent nonfederal match.

HMGP provides funds to implement hazard mitigation measures following a presidentially declared disaster. Grants are designed to assist local communities, states, federally recognized tribes and territories as they implement mitigation measures during the recovery process. The goal is to reduce overall risk to the population and structures from future hazards, while also reducing reliance on federal funding in future disasters.
