It is crucial that once you are advised that FEMA can place a travel trailer or manufactured housing unit on your property, you immediately contact the electric company to install a second line.
These actions are specifically required by you:
- You must contact your electric utility provider and arrange for a second service and a temporary meter to be specifically added to the unit.
- The FEMA contractor will arrange for permits. The contractor will advise you when to have the meter installed and the power turned on. If you experience any delays or setbacks with this requirement, you should contact the FEMA Helpline (Joint Field Office at 855-576-4225/800-621-3362) immediately to discuss possible solutions.
- After the meter is installed, your local officials will inspect the installation and notify the utility that power may be turned on. Delays in any of these steps can hold up occupancy.
What Should I Tell the Power Company?
Inform the power company that the account is for a FEMA temporary housing unit installation. Specify if you are receiving a manufactured housing unit or travel trailer.
I Owe Too Much Money and I Don’t Want to Use Electricity
If you are unable to afford to pay for electricity, contact FEMA immediately. We may be able to pair you with a local nonprofit that may be able to assist you. For your own safety, FEMA cannot allow you to occupy a FEMA temporary housing unit without working utilities.
What Happens If I Don’t Call, or I Take My Time Making Arrangements with the Electrical Company?
If you do not call for a hookup, you run the risk of losing the unit or being removed from the program.
