FEMA’s Individual and Households Program helps eligible individuals and households who have uninsured or under-insured necessary expenses and serious needs caused by a federally declared disaster. The assistance is meant to return a home to a safe, sanitary and functional residence. Federal assistance cannot duplicate the benefits provided by other sources, such as insurance, and cannot pay for all disaster losses caused. Individuals should register with FEMA to determine whether they are eligible for assistance. Register by going online to DisasterAssistance.gov, using the FEMA mobile app, or calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. If you use video relay service, captioned telephone service or others, give FEMA your number for that service.

Disaster Survivor Assistance (DSA) teams from FEMA are going door-to-door in Cook County communities, helping disaster-impacted residents navigate the federal assistance process. 

Fraudulent activity typically increases after disasters. Con artists may try to get money from you or ask for your personal information to try and steal your identity. If your home or personal property was damaged in recent storms and flooding, be careful when giving out your personal information.

Cook County residents affected by the severe storms and flooding of June 29 – July 2, 2023, may now call or go online to register for disaster assistance from FEMA.
