California: Napa County’s Community-Wide Comprehensive Wildfire Mitigation Program

Community-Wide Comprehensive Wildfire Mitigation Program enhances wildfire resilience through ecosystem restoration, structure hardening, and defensible space

alert - info

Napa, California: $37.50 million

Project Description

Approximately 36% of Napa County's population lives in wildfire hazard severity zones. The county has seen 26 wildfires since 2015, with 62% of the county being burned since 2017. To address this issue, the county began the Napa County Community-Wide Comprehensive Wildfire Mitigation Program. The program has two phases: defensible space or ignition-resistant construction and hazardous fuels reduction.

The program aims to reduce the risk to human life, property and critical infrastructure by removing or modifying vegetative fuels, creating fuel breaks, and installing fire-resistant vegetation. The project will also protect evacuation routes, drinking water reservoirs, and facilities, while improving forest health and resiliency. These actions look to ensure Napa County’s long-term wildfire and climate resilience for many of its residents and communities.
