California program offers seismic retrofit grants to multi-family properties
Sacramento, California: $20.2 million
Project Description
The California Earthquake Authority will offer retrofit grants to owners of multi-family, soft-story apartment, and condominium buildings. This project will benefit low-income, disadvantaged communities in cities in eight California counties where buildings have not been retrofitted and lack adequate seismic resistance. These counties are: Alameda, Contra Costa, Los Angeles, Kern, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco and San Mateo.
The project includes adding seismic bracing: sheathing walls with plywood; new plywood sheath walls; new steel-braced frames; new steel cantilever columns; new proprietary seismic elements such as strong walls; and, if required, new footings at any of these lateral force-resisting elements.
The program is expected to seismically retrofit more than 380-760 buildings with five to 10 units.
