In 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall on Florida’s coast, causing 149 fatalities and $112 billion in damage. FEMA’s Building Science Disaster Support Program deployed a Mitigation Assessment Team that visited the area to assess the numerous successes and failures observable in the built environment.

Sheltering from the Storm: A Hurricane Ian Success Story
A community in Florida designed its own hurricane storm shelter that was activated during Hurricane Ian in 2022. Members from the surrounding area took shelter in the facility throughout the event. To learn more about the specifics, FEMA’s Building Science Disaster Support Program (BSDS) deployed a team of subject matter experts to visit the facility.
