A new earthquake- and fire-resistant pipeline provides drinking water to three communities.
Hillsborough, California: $23.38 million
Project Description
Hillsborough, with a population of 11,016 residents, is subject to wildfires and earthquakes from the highly active San Andreas fault. The natural hazards threaten the water supply for the cities of Burlingame, Hillsborough and Millbrae.
The project will design and build a new pump station and pipeline and will provide a reliable source of water to all three communities. The underground pipeline will be resistant to fire and seismic activity. It will also avoid major fault lines. The project will provide access to an alternative and seismically reliable source of water.
This mitigates the high risk of total water supply loss during an earthquake event. Through the use of a gravity-fed system in the pump station, the project also eliminates reliance on the power grid.
