LAHAINA, Maui – Sacred Hearts School has stood as a cornerstone of Lahaina since its’ establishment in 1863. On Aug. 8, 2023, the K-12 school was destroyed in the Maui wildfires, while the Catholic church on site miraculously emerged unscathed. Thanks to a collaborative effort involving FEMA, school officials, and generous community members, a new temporary home was found, and a lease was signed for a property in Kāʻanapali, West Maui.

LAHAINA, Maui– Every school day, on a hillside overlooking the West Maui coastline, King Kamehameha III Elementary welcomes hundreds of children to its campus. It’s a temporary replacement for their former waterfront school, which served Lahaina’s children for more than a century until wildfires destroyed the school and much of the historic town. Remarkably, the temporary school was built in a matter of months.

Region 9’s Youth Preparedness Toolkit is for young people and youth leaders interested in emergency preparedness. Organized by age group (elementary, junior high, and high school), the Toolkit includes activities from FEMA, partner organizations, and local governments. It also provides a Youth Leader Resource Hub focused on school safety, planning, and inclusion.

The Youth Preparedness Toolkit from FEMA Region 9 is designed to educate and empower young people in emergency preparedness through age-appropriate activities across elementary, junior high, and high school levels. Using a Learn-Practice-Share model, the toolkit connects preparedness skills with regional hazards like earthquakes and wildfires. Activities range from creating personalized emergency kits for younger students to leadership roles in high school, such as organizing preparedness clubs and social media campaigns. A resource hub for youth leaders includes tools on school safety, inclusion, and planning, helping to build resilient communities and inspire youth to take an active role in emergency readiness.
