Orlando, Fla. – FEMA is awarding Miami-Dade County a $1,780,624.50 Hazard Mitigation grant to fund the initial phase 1 of design and engineering a project to harden Pump Station 1 and Pump Station 2 located at 390 NW North River Drive, Miami, FL 33128 and 1075 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33132, respectively.
These stations provide wastewater conveyance services to a direct service population of approximately 811,722 people. Both wastewater pump stations have experienced failures in the past due to loss of power and flood inundation.
This initial phase includes but is not limited to surveying, engineering, designing, plans, and preparation, permitting and bidding for the proposed project. A second Phase will be reviewed, and a fully developed project is expected following the completion of this first phase. If approved, construction will be part of phase 2.
The actions taken to harden these facilities will minimize impacts to the pump stations resulting from flooding, wind and power outages.
Funding for this HMGP project is authorized under Section 404 of the Robert T. Stafford Act.
HMGP dollars help strengthen communities by improving buildings, facilities and infrastructure that people use every day. A 2018 report from the National Institute of Building Sciences found that one dollar spent on hazard mitigation will save more than six dollars of recovery and rebuilding costs.
Florida has a FEMA-approved Enhanced Mitigation Plan, making the state eligible for HMGP funding not to exceed 20 percent of the estimated total amount of money spent by FEMA on disaster grants in the Hurricane Irma disaster. From this amount, HMGP reimburses the state up to 75 percent of eligible costs for mitigation projects. The remaining amount comes from other sources such as state and local assets and a combination of cash and in-kind sources.
