BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana’s FEMA mobile home occupants who have successfully returned to a permanent home following the August 2016 floods should know their hard work is being paid forward.
Texas has received 505 vacated mobile homes from Louisiana to help the temporary housing needs of Hurricane Harvey survivors. Flood survivors once occupied the units but made significant recovery strides by returning to repaired homes or finding other suitable permanent housing.
The number of units going from Louisiana to Texas will rise as more and more Louisiana occupants complete home repairs or find other long-term housing options.
After removing vacated mobile homes, FEMA cleans and inspects all vacated units to ensure they remain suitable for temporary disaster housing. Units that pass safety inspections may then be used to house other disaster survivors.
At the state’s request, FEMA provided mobile homes to households as a last resort to some 2016 flood survivors who were unable to find temporary housing. More than half of the 4,490 households who received units have recovered and returned to a repaired home or found other suitable housing.
