Hazard mitigation planning reduces loss of life and property by minimizing the impact of disasters. It begins with state, tribal and local governments identifying natural disaster risks and vulnerabilities that are common in their area. After identifying these risks, they develop long-term strategies for protecting people and property from similar events. Mitigation plans are key to breaking the cycle of disaster damage and reconstruction.

The National Mitigation Planning Program has started to update the Tribal Mitigation Planning policy. As part of this update, FEMA engaged with Tribal Nations from June 2023 to March 2024. FEMA gathered feedback from Tribal Nations about the current mitigation planning policy and priorities for a policy update. Tribal leaders, elders, and representatives shared verbal and written comments through consultations, feedback sessions, and emails.
The Summary of Feedback Report reviews the tribal engagement process. It also summarizes comments received.
