FEMA manages the National Flood Insurance Program which includes more than 22,600 Participating Communities. This year, FEMA’s Floodplain Management Division is conducting a survey of the nation’s Floodplain Administrators who manage local floodplains for these jurisdictions. Survey findings will inform a five-year National Floodplain Administrators Training Strategy that will be coordinated by the Floodplain Management Division.

Last week, the National Weather Service issued heat advisories across our region, impacting residents of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia. Baltimore, D.C., and Philadelphia saw record-breaking heat. Everyone can take steps to reduce risks from heat. FEMA Region 3 and HHS Region 3 encourage residents to prepare and protect themselves and their communities.

FEMA will evaluate a Biennial Radiological Emergency Preparedness Exercise for communities around the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station. The exercise will occur during the week of April 15, 2024 to assess the ability of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the State of Maryland to respond to an emergency at the nuclear facility.

This week, FEMA senior officials joined local leaders to celebrate non-financial climate planning provided to Crisfield, Maryland, and a resilience grant to Tulsa, Oklahoma, as a result of FEMA’s Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program. During the events, officials highlighted ways communities can take advantage of the agency’s Direct Technical Assistance program that offers free help in the application process and how FEMA grants can help them become more resilient to severe weather events and future hazards.
