FEMA Serious Needs Assistance Available in West Virginia

Residents of Hancock, Kanawha, Marshall, Ohio, Roane, Wetzel, and Wood counties are eligible to apply for assistance from FEMA to help with costs from damage and losses caused by the April 11-12, 2024, storms. Residents are urged to apply by Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024. 

FEMA can help people get back on their feet by providing flexible, up-front funding immediately following a disaster.

Serious Needs Assistance is a $750 direct payment helps eligible households pay for essential items like, food, water, baby formula, medication, and other emergency supplies. This payment is in addition to other funding FEMA may provide survivors based on their unique circumstances. 

Serious Needs Assistance is a one-time $750 payment per household. If you have registered for FEMA assistance, you may have received Serious Needs Assistance. It is important that you continue to stay in touch with FEMA as you may be eligible for additional assistance. 

You may be eligible for Serious Needs Assistance if:

  • You complete a FEMA application;
  • FEMA can confirm your identity;
  • The home where you live most of the year is in a disaster-declared county;
  • FEMA confirms the disaster damage from an inspection or documents you send;
  • You tell FEMA you are displaced, need shelter or have other emergency costs due to the disaster on your application; AND
  • You apply for FEMA assistance while Serious Needs Assistance is available.
  • Serious Needs Assistance is available for survivors who apply in the first 30 days after a disaster is declared. FEMA may extend this time to 60 days in response to a written request from the impacted state, territory, or Tribal Nation.
