Fact Sheet: FEMA May Help April 13 Storms Survivors with Generator Costs

  • April 13 storm survivors who applied for FEMA help may receive grants for generator costs.
  • The applicant’s registered dwelling must be their primary residence and located in Aiken, Barnwell, Berkeley, Colleton, Hampton, Marlboro, Oconee, Orangeburg or Pickens county.

Survivors Who Owned a Generator Prior to the April 13 Storms

  • Generators must have been damaged as a result of the April 13 storms for FEMA to consider helping them for replacement or repair costs.
  • The allowable grant amount for generators is limited to the prevailing retail or rental rate for a 5.5 kw-sized generator, as identified by FEMA.

Survivors Who Purchased or Rented a Generator following the April 13 Storms

  • Survivors may be eligible for FEMA financial help if they purchased or rented a generator to power medical equipment.
  • The survivor must submit a statement from a medical services provider, indicating the equipment is medically necessary.
  • The rent or purchase must have been due to disruption in electrical utility service caused by the April 13 storms.
  • The allowable grant amount for generators is limited to the prevailing retail or rental rate for a 5.5 kw-sized generator, as identified by FEMA.
  • The eligible reimbursement period for generator rental costs or purchase is the incident period, April 12 to April 13.

How to Appeal

  • Survivors who applied for help may appeal if they disagree with FEMA’s decision on generator reimbursement.
  • They should submit an appeal letter that explains why they disagree with FEMA’s decision. It’s important to specify how reimbursement claims are disaster-related and to attach supporting documents.
  • Mail documents and the letter within 60 days of receiving a determination letters the address below. Also attach the cover letter you received from FEMA.
