Compensation Available for Hosting Fire Evacuees

Release Date:
March 19, 2024

If you spent money to host evacuees in your home after the Hermit's Peak/Calf Canyon Fire, you may seek reimbursement for the costs you incurred before November 14, 2022.

Examples of costs associated with hosting evacuees include food, utilities, increased mileage and gas used for transporting evacuees, toiletries, clothing, air mattresses, linens, pet food, and other supplies. These costs are reimbursable from the day evacuees moved into your home until the evacuees moved out as long as that is before November 14, 2022.

Option 1: How to Seek Compensation Using the Standard Calculator

You will work with a Navigator to complete a simple worksheet, which requests the following information:

  • Name, age, gender of each evacuee
  • Dates you hosted the evacuees
  • Details regarding additional expenses (if applicable)

The Claims Office then uses a standard calculation to estimate your expenses. The calculations reduce the amount of documentation needed to seek compensation. If you feel you are owed more, you may submit documentation for actual costs.

Option 2: Documentation for Actual Costs

If you believe you spent more than what is available using the standard calculation, you may provide receipts and documentation for costs you had, including:

  • Increased food costs
  • Increased utility costs
  • Increased mileage and fuel
  • Other costs associated with supporting evacuees, such as toiletries, clothing, pet food and supplies, and related items
