Buncombe County at a Glance

Since the federal disaster declaration for Tropical Storm Fred, Buncombe County residents have received more than $2.9 million in federal funds as of Nov. 8, 2021:

  • $591,868 in FEMA grants to homeowners and renters.
  • $1,667,217 in claims paid to National Flood Insurance Program policyholders.
  • $646,600 in U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans approved for homeowners, renters and businesses (as of Oct. 31, 2021).

Individual Assistance in Buncombe County:

  • 198 homeowners and renters have been approved for $591,868 in federal grants through FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program. This includes:
    • $544,193 in Housing Assistance grants for home repair, home replacement, and/or rental assistance.
    • $47,675 in Other Needs Assistance grants to replace essential household items and for other critical disaster-related costs.
  • 62 homeowners and renters have been approved for rental assistance.
  • 699 home inspections issued; 680 completed.
  • Disaster Survivor Assistance Teams (DSAT) went door to door in Buncombe County, conducting outreach to 710 households to offer help with registration and provide referrals to other resources.
  • A Document Drop-off Center operated until Oct. 2 to help survivors with registration, application updates and referrals.

 

  • IA Assistance in Asheville:
    • 47 homeowners and renters have been approved for $214,554 in federal grants through FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program. This includes:
      • $200,529 in Housing Assistance grants for home repair, home replacement, and/or rental assistance.
      • $14,025 in Other Needs Assistance grants to replace essential household items and for other critical disaster-related costs.
    • 22 homeowners and renters have been approved for rental assistance. ·

 

  • IA Assistance in Candler:
    • 69 homeowners and renters have been approved for $213,612 in federal grants through FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program. This includes:
      • $188,072 in Housing Assistance grants for home repair, home replacement, and/or rental assistance.
      • $25,540 in Other Needs Assistance grants to replace essential household items and for other critical disaster-related costs.
    • 24 homeowners and renters have been approved for rental assistance. ·

U.S. Small Business Administration:

  • SBA operated a Business Recovery Center at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, 1465 Sand Hill Rd., Suite 1054, Candler, NC 28715 through Nov. 8. SBA has approved $646,600 in low-interest disaster loans to 22 applicants (as of Oct. 31, 2021).

National Flood Insurance Program:

  • NFIP has paid $1,667,217 to policyholders who filed claims.

Public Assistance:

  • Buncombe County was approved for assistance for debris removal, emergency protective measures and permanent work Sept. 8, 2021.
    • To date, 6 Requests for Public Assistance (RPAs) have been received and 4 approved. One pending FEMA review. 1 pending Recipient review.
    • The state has held applicant briefings.
