Collaboration between FEMA and the territory toward strengthening a culture of resilience led to the approval of $14.5 million toward permanent work in February to support recovery projects from the 2017 hurricanes. The $14.5 million includes $10.3 million to strengthen the territory’s power grid and $3.3 million for repairs to school facilities.

Hurricane Maria’s winds and rains left Arthur Richards Junior High School in ruins in September 2017. FEMA and the Territory made it a priority to assess damage to the school’s six buildings and grounds, collaborate to build out temporary modular classrooms for students and ultimately replace the school.

FEMA continues to coordinate resources with the U.S. Virgin Islands to strengthen the territory’s power grid and make its communications infrastructure more resilient. This month, approximately $21 million has been approved through the Public Assistance Program for permanent repairs to St. John’s power grid, St. Croix’s internet infrastructure and the emergency operations center on St. Thomas.

ST. CROIX, U.S. Virgin Islands -- The landfall of two Category 5 hurricanes within 14 days of one another inflicted damage to thousands of Virgin Islanders’ homes and put extreme stress on the territory’s critical service sectors in September 2017. Corrugated aluminum from roofs and vegetative debris piled up, thousands of homes could not receive electricity and major medical facilities were damaged across the territory.
