Many households who received Manufactured Housing Units—MHUs—as a temporary residence after the August 2016 flood have returned to a repaired home or found other suitable housing.
Below explains the MHU move out process and what steps households need to take during this significant recovery achievement.
Who to Contact
- Contact their FEMA representative to tell them they’re ready to move out.
- Contact the utility company to turn off power to the MHU.
What Occupants Need to Do Before Moving Out
- Make sure there is no damage beyond normal wear and tear.
- Make sure all the FEMA-provided furniture and appliances are present.
- Remove all personal items.
What Happens During Removal
- FEMA is responsible for arranging the MHU’s removal after occupants have accomplished their long-term housing plan.
- The agency issues a work order to uninstall and remove the MHU. This involves:
- Disconnecting and removing utility lines
- Removing skirting, steps, ramps, anchors and straps
- Filling in trenches created during MHU installation
- Clearing gravel and poles that were placed during MHU installation
- Replacing fences that were moved or taken down during MHU removal
- FEMA only removes items it had installed.
- FEMA does not perform any landscaping after removing the MHU.
Duration
- FEMA has provided MHUs at no cost for more than a year. However, the number of households who have progressed through recovery and no longer need MHUs rises daily.
- FEMA is working to remove MHUs as quickly and safely as possible. The agency appreciates the patience of the many households who have moved back home and want units removed while FEMA deals with multiple disasters nationwide.
- Occupants who have moved out should contact their FEMA representative if they have any questions about the status of their MHU removal.
