Environmental & Historic Preservation Resources

FEMA funded projects must undergo Environmental and Historic Preservation (EHP) review to ensure we protect and preserve our natural and historic resources.

These tools help explain the federal environmental and historic resource laws and Executive Orders. They provide guidance specific to Region 3 states for the EHP compliance portion of the grant application process.

Public Invited to Review Flood Maps in Baltimore County, MD
FEMA is proposing updates to the Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for Baltimore County, Maryland. Community partners are invited to participate in a 90-day appeal and comment period. The updated maps were produced in coordination with local, state and FEMA officials. Significant community review of the maps has already taken place, but before the maps become final, community partners can identify any corrections or questions about the information provided and submit appeals or comments. The 90-day appeal period will begin on July 8, 2021. Residents, business owners and other community partners are encouraged to review the updated maps to learn about local flood risks and potential future flood insurance requirements. They may submit an appeal if they perceive that modeling or data used to create the map is technically or scientifically incorrect.

FEMA Region 3 Updates Guidance on COVID-19 Funeral Expense Aid
FEMA has amended the agency’s COVID-19 funeral assistance policy to assist with COVID-19 related fatalities that occurred in the early months of the pandemic. This policy change will allow applicants to submit a statement or letter from the death certificate’s certifying official, medical examiner, or coroner that attributes the death to COVID-19 fatalities that occurred between Jan. 20 and May 16, 2020.

FEMA Urges Mid-Atlantic Residents to Prepare for Severe Weather as Tropical Storm Elsa Approaches
As Tropical Storm Elsa approaches the Mid-Atlantic, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is encouraging residents and business owners with interests in the Mid-Atlantic to stay aware of the weather and prepare for possible hazards such as flooding, tornadoes, and power outages. It only takes one storm to change your life, and that storm does not necessarily need to be a hurricane to cause damage.

West Virginians: You Have Less Than Two Weeks Left to Register With FEMA
If you suffered damage or losses from the Feb. 27-March 4 severe storms and flooding, you have less than two weeks left to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for federal disaster assistance. The deadline to register is Monday, July 19. Individual disaster assistance grants for homeowners and renters are available to eligible residents of Cabell, Kanawha, Mingo and Wayne counties. Here is how to register: Call 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585. Online at DisasterAssistance.gov. By downloading the FEMA app. FEMA grants do not have to be repaid. FEMA assistance is nontaxable and will not affect eligibility for Social Security, Medicaid or other federal benefits.
