FEMA Approves $1,280,884 to Vermont Electric Coop for Electrical Transmission System Repairs

REGION 1- The Vermont Electric COOP will receive $1,280,844 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the cost incurred due to damage to the COOP's electrical transmission system as a result of a May 4-5, 2018, severe storm and flooding event. This funding was brought to furition by a partnership between FEMA and Vermont Emergency Management.

The $1,280,844 grant represents the federal share of the total project cost of $1.7 million. The remainder will come from non-federal sources.

This grant is funded through FEMA's Public Assistance Grant program which reimburses communities for actions taken in the immediate response and during recovery from a disaster. Eligible applicants include states, federally recognized tribal governments, U.S. territories, local governments, and certain private non-profit organizations. The grant applications are submitted from the state, which coordinates the process with local governments.

FEMA obligates funding for this project directly to the state. It is the State's responsibility to ensure that the eligible sub-recipient receives this award. Following the stat's review process and upon receipt of appropriate documentations, they will provide funds to the sub-recipient on the reimbursable basis.

The Vermont Electric COOP is located in Lamoille County; other counties to receive a Presidential declaration include Chrittenden, Grand Isle, Orange and Orleans. These counties received a Presidential declaration due to the extent of the damages caused by the severe storm and flooding on May 4-5, 2018. To date FEMA has obligaged more than $1.8 million to the State of Vermont as a result of damages from that declaration, DR-4380-VT, under the Public Assistance program.
