FEMA Provides More Than $2.7 Million to University Hospitals Health System

Release Date:
Jen 19, 2020

CHICAGO - The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency (Ohio EMA) announced today that more than $2.7 million has been made available in federal disaster aid for medical supplies, services, and equipment to the state of Ohio.

This grant funding is part of the recovery efforts in response to the COVID-19 federal disaster declaration of March 31, 3020. University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center provided supplies and commodities, decontamination systems, medical services, testing, screening and ambulatory services. They also expanded the capacity of an existing medical facility, trained staff, sheltered healthcare workers, built a temporary facility for emergency medical care and operated an Emergency Operations Center.

“FEMA’s Public Assistance Program is an important resource for communities affected by COVID-19,” said FEMA Region V Administrator James K. Joseph. “This funding allowed University Hospitals Health System to support the critical medical needs of the communities they serve and effectively respond to the COVID-19 outbreak.”

“Areas in and around Cleveland, Ohio have recorded the second highest rates of COVID-19 cases in the state,” said Ohio Emergency Management Agency Executive Director Sima Merick. “This funding allows University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center to continue its mission of providing critical medical care to patients.”

The Public Assistance Program funding will be administered by Ohio EMA.  FEMA provides a 75 percent federal share of eligible reimbursable expenses for this project.  The federal share of the FEMA grant is $2,719,300 with the remaining amount paid by University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.

FEMA’s Public Assistance Program provides funding to local government jurisdictions and eligible private non-profits for the repair, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged infrastructure as well as costs incurred for debris removal, disaster cleanup and emergency actions taken to protect lives or property.  To learn more, visit FEMA’s website at https://www.fema.gov/public-assistance-local-state-tribal-and-non-profit.
