The Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Claims Office May Reimburse for Eligible Medical Expenses

The Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Claims Office may reimburse claimants for reasonable out-of-pocket treatment costs for medical expenses incurred between April 6, 2022, and March 14, 2025. 

Medical expenses that may be eligible for reimbursement include doctor visits, hospital stays, mental health treatment including addiction treatments (resulting from, or worsened by the fire rendered by a licensed mental health professional), insurance deductibles and co-pays, medications and transportation expenses related to medical care. 

Mental health conditions identified before March 14, 2025, may be eligible for payments past this date with documentation from the licensed mental health substantiating treatments are ongoing and identifying the period during which continued treatment will be required.

Examples of Medical Expenses Covered

  • Medical care for personal injury
  • Psychological care
  • Costs for out-of-pocket treatment caused or worsened by the fire, including but not limited to mental health conditions, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or depression identified prior to March 14, 2025.
  • Appointment costs
  • Hospital stays
  • Pharmaceutical (medication)
  • Deductible and co-pay
  • Transportation costs related to medical treatment

Examples of Supporting Documentation 

Receipts and other supporting documentation are required to prove the cost of treatment and that medical expenses are directly related to injuries from the fire. Advanced payment for medical expenses will be considered if there is documentation of costs that shows ongoing treatment as prescribed by the medical provider. A license medical professional must provide the care. Examples of documentation include: 

  • Documents showing the medical issue is directly linked to the fire
  • Receipts for hospital stays, deductibles and co-pays, and costs associated with prescriptions or medical equipment
  • Medical records and bills
  • For over-the-counter medication to be considered, documents should include a treating medical professional’s recommendation or prescription
  • Credit card or bank statements showing payment (if you do not have receipts)
  • Explanation of benefits from your medical insurance carrier deferring costs for your appointment or treatments
  • Appointment records, including dates of medical appointments or follow-ups to document required travel
  • Itemized receipts for gas, including photos, scanned copies and/or screenshots of receipts

Mileage log documenting mileage and maps with travel points marked to verify mileage In addition to providing documentation from their provider, individuals seeking compensation for fire-related medical care expenses will need to justify the ongoing treatment(s) via a signed declaration and identify which continued treatment(s) will be required and the locations you need to travel to/from for treatment.

Claimants are encouraged to submit claims even if the documents listed above are unavailable. Please submit your claim even if you do not have access to any documents listed. Your navigator will work with you to find solutions and help you gather the necessary documents. A checklist is available on fema.gov to assist you in gathering supporting documentation.

Anyone impacted by the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire and subsequent flooding is encouraged to start a claim with the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Claims Office as soon as possible. The deadline to submit a Notice of Loss (NOL) is March 14, 2025. To date, the Claims Office has paid more than $1.94 billion in compensation.
